I expect that vw’s coworker is genuinely confused, but I’ll mention that these days Psychology is a popular major for students planning on med-school, particularly for women students and those planning to become psychiatrists. There are still prerequisites to take in other departments, but that is also true if you major in Biology or Chemistry. Psychology in a research university is all about brains and genes and cognitive functioning, so it’s a better match to med school than it was thirty years ago.

Adelaide is further west than Melbourne, they're essentially both on the south coast. About a 10-hour drive, were one to be driving. Faster by plane, obviously.
