I'll bet David's book is more his speed because there's an affinity between Tom Waits' subject matter and Murakami's novels, but I'll also bet that Murakami listens to the Beach Boys way more often than Tom Waits.
Well, it would be an opportunity for him to listen to Tom Waits.
I'm guessing from the Murakami books I've read that he listens to a) a shitload of jazz, b) a chunk of Western classical music, and c) a wee bit of classic 60s rock.
