Looks like a missing feature for the new board.
Buffistas Building a Better Board ++
Do you have problems, concerns, or recommendations about the technical side of the Phoenix? Air them here. Compliments also welcome.
So I just committed a perl script ('cause that's how I roll), that attempts to translate between the two databases, and clean up the data. The output is 210M compressed, which is smaller than I thought it would be.
As it is, it won't really work, because you define some fields to be non-NULL that don't exist in the old database.
So, anyway, take a look at the script. You could probably run it yourself, since mysql.buffistas.org doesn't seem to be firewalled. (I ran it several times during testing, so it wouldn't surprise me if we bump into some kind of provider database transfer limit, sorry!) Please check if the translation between the table names and field names looks OK, and anything else that you see needs to be fixed.
Cool. Thanks!
Working on user migration at the moment, but I haven't had much time.
I think it's going to work like this. If you have a current active account and login with your old password, you'll be redirected to a page to reset your password. You'll type in your user name, old password, new password, and new password confirmation. Once reset, you'll be able to log into the site with your new password. You won't need to use a different password if it is at least 8 characters long. Even if you use the same password, resetting it will still be required. E-mail activation won't be required in this case, only for brand new users.
Will this site eventually go away? Or is the new site just for phone users? Everybody migrates, this one gets mothballed? Will this one remain searchable? Or can we access old threads from the new site? Will the new site have a COMM, and mine it for the quotes site?
Luddites want to know.
Yes this site will eventually go away, but all the threads will be migrated to the new one. There will still be COMM, but I don't know about the quotes site as I don't know how the quotes bit works. If that is broken, the functionality could be added as part of the new site.
Once migration functionality is being tested on the beta site, it will be more clear how things will work. On the UI front, I still need to add the left sidebar as an option on larger displays so that will make things more familiar.
Oh. If you are an existing user and don't know your password, I'll modify the 'I forgot my password' functionality to migrate when it resets a password though that relies on having a a good profile email address. If you are an existing user and don't know your password and don't have a good profile address, then it will be time to contact an admin.
Do we/can we keep our original signup number? I like my second decade (18) sign in number. A minor thing, but one I'm proud of.
Aw, man. I just read my profile page. My tagline graveyard is quotes from a dozen years or more of Buffista history, including Frankenbuddha and Ginger.
