I dunno what to do, but the LAista list is getting spammed but good. I've been clearing it out, but is there anything else that can be done. Also, no one has really used it for its original purpose in at least 2 years, so maybe we could just get rid of it?

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

I don't think I'm even on the LAista list currently. Yeah, maybe we need an LAistas part deux.

I would love to be part of a new LAista list, fwiw. I don't expect us all to be best friends, but it would be nice to get together now and then.

Well, there are two different issues.

The first is that the current mailing list is getting spammed a significant amount and since all of the messages come to me for approval, I'd like to figure out how to make that not happen so much, even if it means making the list defunct.

The second is that the list has not been active in years. The only messages we have gotten are spam. In fact, I think the last time it was active may have been when Perkins was still the mod and it probably wasn't very active even then.

It's not really an issue about best friends. It's an issue that here is this list out there that hasn't been used and is now clogging my mailbox with spam. Which I'd like for it to stop.

I guess I can see a couple of solutions. Someone else can become the moderator for the list which gets nothing but spam (which is a good solution for me, possibly sucky for the person who volunteers) or we can create a new list.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Isn't there a way to automatically deny any mail that comes from outside the list? It means the mod will have to manually enter the people that don't actually subscribe using the email command, but it would be a whole lot less work.

ita, if there is a way, I can't seem to figure it out. There's a way to automatically discard all deferred messages from a single day, but in my tinkering, that discarding doesn't apply to all deferred messages from that point forward. Frankly, it's a pain in the ass.

There used to be, but I have that box checked on the Somervillain list, and I still get an e-mail about each spam. And, the list is so overflowed right now that I can't even get in to clean it out... It takes too long to load the page, so it times out.

So it sounds like all the localista lists (or at least 2 of them) could use a revamp.

It used to not do this. I'd go in once a week and clean it out, and everything was hunky dory. I'm not really sure what happened. I thought it was just me...

Of course I don't want you to have to contend with a lot of spam, Kat. I just meant that the reason it hasn't been used in a couple of years may be in part that not all of us even knew it existed. If we think it isn't likely to be used regardless, that's fine.
