"The Washington Post reports that House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (R-Tx) has requested raw data and personal financial information on three scientists who published a paper which claimed that temperatures rose precipitously in the 20th century. Colleagues (including other Republicans) are calling the investigation 'misguided and illegitimate.' Barton has long been an opponent of government action on global warming."

Many scientists and some of Mr. Barton's Republican colleagues say they were stunned by the manner in which the committee, whose chairman rejects the existence of climate change, demanded personal and private information last month from researchers whose work supports a contrary conclusion. The scientists, co-authors of an influential 1999 study showing a dramatic increase in global warming over the past millennium, were told to hand over not only raw data but personal financial information, information on grants received and distributed, and computer codes.

How long will conservatives be allowed to harass scientists who publish data that disagrees with Republican ideology?

God, I don't know what else to say. Except that for the past five years there's been a long series of attempts by conservatives to silence scientific results they don't like....

OK, the fact that some Republicans are shocked by this is a good sign.

It does. And sliders can hang when they don't break. As do curveballs. They're just hanging up in the strike zone, and very hittable.

I recommend watching Charlie & the Chocolate Factory since that made me laugh on numerous occasions, though mostly from the production numbers. Deep Roy is a very committed performer.

But no one told me they had black licorice ice cream. That was amazing. and no one else really wants it but me...Unfortunatley I want a lot.

One of my favourite ice cream flavours that I don't see very often is tiger tail, which is like creamsicle orange with black licorice through it. So good.

I've been in a rage on this particular issue for the last two years ever since I began work on a book about the subject. Though this is not the only area in which routine supression of science takes place, it is one of the most deadly. In a way it is like Holocaust denial, since unchecked global warming will kill as many people or more than the Holocaust did. In a way it is worse, because Holocaust denial dishonors the dead, but global warming denial helps those murders take place.

An ice cream place (or, I should the ice cream place) here sometimes has licorice ice cream. I think it's pretty popular. Everyone I know loves it. Except for me. I hate black licorice.

Re: the scientists. Can they really ask for personal financial information? I mean, isn't that just ridiculous?!

So far they have asked not used subpoenas. If they choose to Congress has pretty much unlimited powers of subpoena.

Typo and tommy, I share your rage. But nobody is ever going to change these people's minds. Half of them think it's their job to hasten the end of the world, and the other half don't care, as long as they've gotten rich, lived the high life and died before the global environmental consequences kick in.

I should have read more before responding about the global warming.

Now, I just have to say, what idiots! My opinion, should anyone care, is that no matter what the reason for the existence of global warming, the real question is what can we do about it. And should anyone have any doubts about global warming, they should just visit Alaska.

On the bright side, I'm in the perfect location for everyone's vacation to the cool. Actually, in a few years we may rival the Riviera. No wonder no one can afford a house here.

Oh I don't want to change their minds. I want to kick their asses (politically - since they are politician not scientists - especially the ones such as Singer who pretend to be scientists.)
