In California Dreamin' when he gets down on his knees, does he begin to pray or pretend to pray?
It's "began" Epic.
But I'm a little amused by your version.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

I think it's "pretend." He's just in the church to get out of the cold. I checked a couple of lyrics sites and they all have pretend as well.
But I'm a little amused by your version.
I swear I only ever heard began until I was in my twenties. Then I started becoming more aware of how naive I sometimes can be - and I think I started looking for the cynicism in everything.
Oops, did I just bring down the amusement factor? Well, glad to hear that not everything is about bring on the bitterness anyway.
Pretend makes sense. I've always heard (and sung) "began".

See, I'm falling for it again!
I looked on more lyrics sites and they have it both ways. We need a definitive source, like a published song book.
That misheard lyrics site lists "began" as misheard and "pretend" as correct. FWIW.
Aha! From [link] :
In the soundtrack version of this song, the words "I pretend to pray" have been changed to "I began to pray".
Qualified yay, Trudy. I thought that was what you wanted?
The hope was that Firm C would hire me and keep my benefits, etc. intact.
ACTUALLY, the hope is everyone would act like grown-ups and provide me with the job I'd been hired for in the first place regardless of for whom. sighhhh
I've made my list of who all needs to be called for bills, insurance and financial stuff. I really should start to work my way through it.
Today may just be the list.
[Edit: fired/hired -- there's a fun typo]
Oh, I didn't make the no-benefits connection. That's a bummer, all right. Sorry things didn't work out better.
Today may just be the list.
This sounds right to me.
