Rereading Freedom's Just Another Way For Nothing Left To Lose, and I was pleased to see that the writer didn't think it was actually a desperately sad story. I really enjoyed it, but I'd been expecting to find it heartbreaking - and I really didn't.
Meanwhile: Air is a rather lovely wee Kaylee/Inara story, set post-Big Damn Movie.

Maybe the sort of heat the male cat is in has more to do with that urban legend about pets in the microwave? I know getting cooked would make me screech.
