I just saw Abre Los Ojos. And...I don't understand why this is supposed to be OMG SO BRILLIANT and Vanilla Sky is supposed to be OMG SUCH CRAP. I loved Vanilla Sky; we ended up discussing it for hours. But seeing the original, I don't see how it's so radically different. The plot is pretty much identical, and I don't see how this one is any more fucked up and/or ambiguous. It's been a few years since I've seen Vanilla Sky, so maybe I'm missing what made that so Hollywood and unsubtle and ew.
People keep saying the ending of Abre Los Ojos is so much better, but I actually think it's less ambiguous. Here, you have an unfamiliar female voice saying "Tranquelo, tranquelo. Abre los ojos." In Vanilla Sky, it's a voice that sounds like Sofia's saying, simply, "Open your eyes." In the former, it's very clear he chose to wake up in the future, but in the latter, it's still ambiguous, which is one of the things that kept our discussion going.
Of course, this could always be one of those Which One You Saw First things.

I thought that Vanilla Sky being mostly identical was the problem. Why remake something in exactly the same way? But I have a problem seeing Cruise and Diaz as anyone but Cruise and Diaz.
Vanilla Sky really only interested me as proof that Cruz is a better actress in her native tongue.
