Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

No netflix -- they're all BMW ads here. I'd say half of them rock (Chosen, The Hostage, Ticker, Beat The Devil) but they're all worth the time to watch them, in the end, if you like Clive.

Coffee and toast:

he was Bruce's sensai or some such.

No, he was never Bruce's mentor (I don't think), but he was a very civilized villain, the type you could sit down and play an intriguing game of chess with. So there were always a large number of civilized conversations between he and Batman.

Defamer's take on that new Clive Owen movie:

Clive Owen is finalizing the details to star in Shoot-Em-Up for New Line, an “ultraviolent” flick with scenes that include “a shootout during a sex scene and another in the midst of a freefall.” We don’t want to fall prey to the hype machine, but this may turn out to be the greatest movie ever made.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Ra's Al Ghul

I would like the record to show that I dislike that apostrophe immensely. Unless his name really does mean "The Al Ghul belonging to Ra."

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Or tough guy and baby?

I saw this movie. It starred Chow Yun-Fat and a lot of Hong Kong neon. Okay, the baby in question would have lost its hearing from all the gunfire going on right near its head, except that it was so obviously a salami wrapped up in baby blankets.

I would be happier with Clive if he would make more movies that don't sound like video games. Period clothing is not required, although a nice natty suit never did anybody wrong.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

And it has possibly the most disturbing poster ever - [link]

That really doesn't do it justice. To see it in its maximum disturbance, you have to see it silk-screened on a T-shirt, like the one my friend wears every effin' week. The baby is just this pale blob amidst Chow Yun Fat, leather, and fire. Very odd.

I have, but it's anime, and so I can glaze over it. It's like I whitefont it right out. The poster for Hard Boiled, though, it has one of the prettiest men ever, so I have to look, and then I get weirded out again.

Was Dana Elcar's death already mentioned here? Sad news--I have fond memories of him in MacGyver, of course, but also loved him as FBI Agent Polk in The Sting.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Dana Elcar was working at Arena Stage when I was an intern there. I was 16 and he was so kind to me. At the time, I was pleased that he took me seriously and never treated me like a kid, but I realize now he was looking out for my feelings and putting up with a lot more chatting from a passionate and opinionated drama-crazy teenager than he needed to and I am doubly grateful.
