'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

As it is, she's only saved him maybe twice! See, not a Mary Sue. :-)

(In case anyone is wondering, my big old Kid Dynamo novel has its Mary Sue-like tendencies, so I only poke fun in a light way.)

If I only had a brain...

she's only saved him maybe twice!

Only when it *really* counts. Hmmmm....

Hands up everybody who prefers Tegan to Sarah Jane Smith.

I liked them both, but in very different ways. Sarah Jane was a better foil for the Doctor in exposition-mode, and had excellent chemistry with Tom Baker's Doctor, but Tegan was just so wonderful in her bloody-mindedness. Also, I loved the fact that she left him from being tired of all the death and mayhem that surrounds him--made Internet!Clive in "Rose" a truthteller when he said that the Doctor's one true Companion is Death.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Hands up everybody who prefers Tegan to Sarah Jane Smith.

I actually don't think Sarah Jane is a good example here, as she did show a fair amount of initiative and competence on her own (even if it was paired with a lot of screaming when menaced by aliens). Jo Grant and Peri were much more companions in the "What's that, Doctor?" mode.

If I only had a brain...

True dat. When the Doctor shows up, it is never a good thing. He may well be avoiding a far worse thing, but the collateral damage is immense.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Sorta like SG1.

If I only had a brain...

That was my point, Matt. Sarah Jane is more of an agent than Tegan. I was saying that it's more satisfying to see somebody who goes out and does things.

God, Liz Shaw rocks. Why, why, WHY are there only 5 Third Doctor episodes on DVD? *weeps*.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

From waaaaaaaaaay back:

As for starting with the first one, those are very limited, due to the BBC's old policy of getting rid of entire episodes to make room in the storage facility back in the 1960s/70s. Even though I consider myself a big Who fan, I've never seen any William Hartnell (#1) or Patrick Troughton (#2), outside of the reunion eps.

The original film for these eps are still in the archives, and most of them were restored in 2005 (and put on Digibeta). No idea if there are plans to release them on DVD any time soon, but they're definitely not missing or destroyed.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Hands up everybody who prefers Tegan to Sarah Jane Smith.

There have been Companions named Tegan and Sarah?

I am amused.

Doctor Who missing episodes

Many episodes of the long-running British science fiction television programme Doctor Who are missing, with no known film or videotape copies existing. They were erased (or "junked") by the BBC during the 1960s and 1970s for a variety of commercial and space-saving reasons. In all, 108 of 253 episodes produced during the first six years of the programme are not currently held in the BBC's archives, although the situation was much worse in the past before episodes were recovered from a variety of sources.
