Fought. The first Cylon war was 40 years earlier. In one of the podcasts from S1 (I think it's "Tigh Me Up..."), Moore went the backstory they'd worked up for Tigh. During the first war he was in a similar situation, going hand-to-hand against Cylons on a ship they boarded.
