Hayden has an article up at his blog from the Canadian magazine Macleans which is a very sobering look at the deficit. Which I know isn't what you want to read over lunch, but...it made me think this massive deficit Bush is building will very likely a severe economic collapse.
It doesn't look like a sky-is-falling analysis. Just basic finances.
Anybody else think we're going to see a Depression-level collapse in the next ten years? 'Cuz I'm thinking it might be time to start investing in gold, rather than my 401(k).
At my university the female residence still requires all male guests to sign in, where the other (mostly male residences) don't even lock their doors. When I was a student, male guests could not stay overnight, but I think they may have changed that, at least.
I think all the airlines just announced spring sales - I got 2 emails in the last hour with specials. It looks like purchase is required within the next 8-9 days, but that travel dates can be in April and/or May depending on airline.
Oh, jesus christ. Paper's done. Paper's not half bad. However, somewhere in my dim brain, it occurs to me that there's actual reading due today as well. Okay, fine, I have time to get it done. Except? This is the one book the campus bookstore didn't have, so I don't currently OWN IT.
Time for panicked run to Barnes and Noble.

I think there's a good chance. But I'm thinking, odds are it won't be that bad.

That's overstating things a little. More like an Argentina-style collapse. Extremely painful, but not as long-lasting.

An Argentina-style collapse doesn't sound that encouraging. Are you investing in gold, Tom?
No dead spots, for one thing. You wound up with a basketball surface that was about 4" thick of solid wood.
But isn't part of the purpose of the planked wood floors to provide a little give? I mean, you could play on concrete and not have any dead spots, but it's harder on the joints.

Right now, I'm investing my money in my mental health, and don't have much to spare.
Gold in and of itself probably isn't a very good investment. But I would include it as part of a well-balanced portfolio that also includes a lot of foreign currency, and foreign-denominated stocks.
