I think there are a lot of things at play in his emotions( like the fact he got out, kid is same age as his own, he didn't keep in very close touch with his army friends and now he's losing them, the weirdness of transition from an Army community to a grad school one,) and he just dribbles them out bit by bit for the rest of us to hold his hands through. You can't push him. But he's always felt deep and pretended to be a hardass.

I love my brother a lot, and know his shit too well, and yes he can be a total ass, but he's good people. And I love him for that and just wish life weren't so icky on his behalf, you know? Funny thing is, I didn't get absolutely mommabearish about him until I moved away and we got to know each other all over again. Hell, I could barely stand him or his ilk from ages 3-16. Now? I'd die for him, seriously. It kinda freaks me out, honestly, to be so damned proud to know this person.
