Firefly Reborn as Online Universe
Like Capt. Mal Reynolds stumbling in after a bar fight, the short-lived but much beloved sci-fi series Firefly will soon make an unexpected return, not as a TV show, but as a massively multiplayer online game.
Now that's shiny.
Multiverse, maker of a free MMO-creation platform, plans to announce Friday morning that it's struck a deal with Fox Licensing to turn the show into an MMORPG in the fashion of Star Wars Galaxies or Eve Online.
The "Browncoats," as Firefly's most devoted fans are known, have been campaigning to bring the show back almost since the moment it was canceled in late 2002. Now they'll get their wish, albeit in a new form.
"We see virtual worlds as an extraordinarily promising new entertainment medium," said Adam Kline, Fox Licensing's vice president of media enterprises in an e-mail. "We believe Multiverse can deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans."

Before, article-writer, before it was canceled.
Those poor fans in Burbank. I wish I could help them, and I wish i could punch those Booster Events people in the face.
What happened to the fans in Burbank?
There was a sold out convention for Firefly fans. It starts tomorrow. People flew in from all over, and the asswipes running the event just posted a message on their website that the con is canceled.
People are out thousands in some cases. And they're stuck in Burbank.

I was just googling, because I didn't know if you were around. Oh my word. It looks like they were on a roller coaster ride, too. Flanvention was off, then it was supposedly on but the website was saying it was off, then it was just off again, and the website is down.
Any idea what happened, Allyson?
No idea what really happened. I have a good idea from experience, but it would just be speculation.
I'm furious.
I know some fans in California were talking about offering an alternative venue, in case the con got cancelled so people didn't feel like the trip was completely wasted, though judging by their website, it looks they cancelled the Backup thing after being told the Con would definitely be on. Ugh.
I have a couple of friends going to Flan and i think one left today from the UK.
there's been quite a bit of miscommunication and lying going on from what i can gather. Fillion's people said the con people called them and told them it was cancelled, but last night one of the (dis)organizers posted saying Fillion had cancelled and then later deleted the thread.
this is why i don't do cons. you don't know who you're giving your money too. i never had any worries with the PBPs or the parties Allyson, Maya and Kristen held. BE are a bunch of asswipes and it should be possible for all of those con-goers to take them to the bank with this.

They were pulling shit with the VM-related one, too, cancelling Francis at the last minute due to "lack of funds" or something like that. I hear the people who went had a really good time, but...this, here, is pretty awful. I have confidence that the fans will organize something, though, and that people will have a good time anyway.
How much were tickets to this thing?
