I'm pretty sure that the OB came up with Browncoat. I could be wrong. It happens.

I've never self-identified as a Browncoat because I tend not to herd or group well, and Browncoats pretty usually come in a bunch.

I was an instant fan when I saw the ship buzz the horses in the opening credits of The Train Job, and when I heard the music. Then I saw Serenity do that veiling turn and burn and I was lost forever.

I did the postcards thing and ponied up for the Variety ad and for flowers for the cast. I made daily calls to the request number to ask that Firefly be released on DVD, and I pre-ordered as many copies as I thought I could give for Christmas that year, and bought my own copy locally, going in stores that had them and guerilla-displaying the boxed sets face-out and in prominent spots.

I have my own set that will never leave my house and a loaner set for pimpage. I was a pushy nag about getting the Firefly soundtrack on CD, and so far have bought five copies, four for gifts.

I pimped out the series dvds in advance of Serenity's release, building as much of an audience as one woman could, singlehanded. And I attended Serenity's opening night in SF with a group of Buffistas.

I've done a lot to promote the show, the movie less because it's not my 'verse, it's Firefly through the Looking Glass and I like things where the series put them. But I've not actively discouraged anybody from seeing the movie or buying the (far inferior, to my mind) soundtrack or the dvd. I've bought a modest amount of tie-in merchandise, and may wind up with another book or two. But I'm not a Browncoat, in that I've not been to nor will I be attending any gathering of Firefly fans (crowd phobia).

I do think that some of the message in Firefly spoke to people, and I think if we keep some of that in mind and carry it forward that in a way, the spirit of the show goes on. Still flying.

But as for another series, another movie, well. Joss clearly has other things on his mind, and all the actors have to make a living meanwhile. Even were they willing to come back for another go at the 'verse, they've aged out of their roles, some. Two of my favorite characters are canonically dead, and the resident crazy has been cured. What sort of story is there left to tell? What's the point of returning to the 'verse for more film? That story is done.

Better to take that spirit, some of those ideals the show and the movie reminded us of, and put them in something new, something else, something shiny in its own right. Firefly was a beautiful thing, but as a concept, I think she's done other than backstory in print and ink.

"Browncoats" came from Kelly's blog on the Official Website. That's what she named us. It kinda stuck. I remember there were various factions of communities who met up with the OB calling themselves other things. When the show got cancelled it seemed appropriate.

I think it's perfectly fine if a person doesn't want to be identified as such. I don't think anyone has to have certain attributes or done certain things or have a particular name coinciding with liking the show, talking about it or promoting it. Some people don't dig labels, and that's legitimate.

Yeah, when I think about it, would I want to be called a Trekkie? Nah. (Although the fact I know nothing about Star Trek really also has a play in that, I suppose). But just in concept.

Bev, the cast are - to a point - contracted to do another 2 movies anyway. So they'd kinda have to. Although that lapses next year, and it's not gone forward for budgeting this year, so they'll fall out of contract anyway.

That said, I do know the concept of Serenity 2 as somebody told me, and I think the idea that the story is done is a little askew. Joss is clever, and I think there would have been something there for everyone.

That said, I completely get the opinion that Serenity isn't Firefly. Because it really isn't. On the run up to the movie coming out, I described the movie to some of the fans as 'Firefly on acid'. Thinking that was universally a good thing. I learned from that.

I don't get the specific features / actions required to be a Browncoat. To me, a Browncoat is a Firefly Fan. end of story. Doesn't matter whether you just bought / enjoy the DVDs, or if you dressed as Kaylee for the LA premiere and later went out for a beer with Adam Baldwin.

And now I'm laughing remembering the Fillies converting our conductor during the BCB Train Job lunch.

Yep, I got an honorary Fillie card too. I've never been enamored of any of the men on Firefly. They are pretty and all, but don't really do anything for me.
