Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
I just watched the movie again last night. I loved the movie but it doesn't do for me what
Firefly
does. I watched both multiple times, but I still go back and watch
Firefly
when I'm bummed, or tired, or upset. It has become an old friend, like I've become part of the crew. Which makes it sound old and tired, and it's not that. I still find nuances I hadn't seen before.
Serenity
doesn't do that for me. It's a movie, not family. I'm not sure how much of that is a function of TV v. feature film.
I'm not delusional. I would be thrilled with more
Firefly,
but I don't see it happening. But deep down inside I
really
want it back.
eta: Anyway, I'm not delusional about the chances of getting
Firefly
back at this point.
Firefly isn't coming back, and honestly, I doubt there will be another movie. The casts contracts expire again, at which point it's pretty much all over.
The funny thing is, speak to Joss about it, and he'll probably say the same as you libkitty. Well - actually - it's not funny I suppose. Serenity, to me, is a good film. It's my favourite film of 2005. The aspect that interests me, however, is post Miranda bits -- eg, Mal's speech. At that point, it's a motion picture. Before that, it's a TV show trying to shoe horn into a motion picture -- there's too much going on, not enough time to exactly explore anything etc.
Firefly, on the other hand, was never trying to be a motion picture. So it never had those problems.
I think, in summary, Firefly works best as a character plodding along drama, and Serenity works best when it has the big story arc goin' on, which is by virtue of the format.

Note number 13, "Snakes on a Jayne." Should maybe be called "Snakes on a shirtless Jayne."
Greetings, sweet Buffistas!
It's been... what, about two years? I was reading your old threads--yes, from all the way on TT--as I watched my Buffy and Firefly collected DVDs (which explains the two years) and finished this thread only today and, coinkidink!--not thirty minutes later, while I was picking out something in the rental store, this woman started talking with the clerk about Firefly, she'd heard it was good... "It's great", said he, "only disregard the AWFUL theme song."
What were the odds, I ask you?! It is a sign, a sign... signifying... something. Wavy.
(Also, for the record, don't agree with this guy @ the theme song, it's fine, really.)
Anyway, I've nothing remotely interesting to say after alla youses massive years-long conversations, only if anyone's keeping tabs, my story goes like this: johnny-come-very-lately to Buffy (not a Buffy issue, just a general aversion to TV--to the point of not having one--yes, even today), looked forward to Serenity (I hadn't seen the series when they aired originally, living in Foreign Lands and all), liked it very much, got the DVDs, liked them very much too, and lo, all was good. Except for the random "Whyyyyy did they cancel it?", which hits me occasionally in the wee hours of the night.
I go now! Hope nobody minds this parachuting. I'd love to keep up with you guys, will try, and--it's been a joy reading you.
Is a welcome really the proper greeting? I'm gathering Lola is a long-time lurker or maybe one-time poster. Since her UID is lower than mine.
Anyhoo, hi Lola!
I think she was saying that she went back and read the old threads, which takes quite a bit of dedication.
Welcome, Lola!
Hi, guys! Wow, night shift! I lurked a bit ages ago on TT and swooped in here once a couple years back, when I finally began watching Buffy (I was staying in a guest house equipped with a teevee)...
And yes, I read or skillfully skimmed all of the posts in all the threads dealing with the shows. I'm not sure I'll manage old Natter, plus it would be, I fear, a tad too voyeuristic--a stranger dropping in on rambling chat between old friends...
takes quite a bit of dedication
Or maybe, in my-mom-parlance, just plain craxiness. :)
But I'm not kidding, and I know you've been told before--it truly is a pleasure to folllow your debates. Not a chore at all.
Oh--before I forget--I followed up on a movie mention by ita--Fong Sai Yuk--and LOVED it! Whole new interest arising! Thanks!
Sorry for the OT, and good night.
Fong Sai Yuk is a classic.
Sorry, I misunderstood. I was picturing Lola scarfing all the threads in one massive orgy of thread-reading recently and then jumping into the convo. So, I retract the "Welcome" and offer a general purpose, "Howdy, nice to meet you" instead.
