For many who don't like sci-fi or fantasy, I don't think this is enough. I certainly wasn't trying to convert anyone - they can read or watch whatever they way. I just wanted to use it in a serious conversation about something else, and that was apparently bad enough.
Oh, yeah - totally legitimate use of the sf card in conversation (I didn't mean to imply otherwise, just in case it seemed so; I was responding in that post to Mr. Broom in general, not about your story in particular.) But - yeah, I recall starting many a point with, "Like on
Buffy
this one time..." and the eyes just glazed over. More's the pity for them, says I!

This one time, at buffista camp....
Question: does anyone know where I can find a transcript of the expository intro that was used when the eps were aired on Fox? I'm pretty sure that they're not on the DVDs, and even if they are, it does me no good since my dad is holding my set hostage.
Have you checked shrift's Firefly script site? The episode transcripts may have it.
Ah! Thanks! I shall check it forthwith.
I don't have them transcribed, but I have .mp3s of both I can send you.
So it's been pointed out that the average domestic gross of the Best Picture films this year at the time of their nomination is only $37.1 million.
And yet, no Serenity noms. sigh.
And now that I've made a topical comment, I must also confess my undying love for JZ's uncle...I don't have anyone cool like that related to me.

I don't think nominations have anything to do with domestic gross.
I wonder (but am too lazy to check) what their costs were. I mean, are these grosses truly on a level with
Serenity?
Do you keep a movie in the theatre longer because the critics like it, even if it's not making its money back?
As for noms--I really liked the film, but I'm not sure, outside of technical categories (and that's just a vague proposal) it could be nominated.
Oh, no. That wasn't my point. I actually think "domestic gross" and "art" are generally almost diametrically opposed. Still, if a film can not be wildly popular and be considered for an Oscar....there's a certain film I'm thinking of. Not that I expected anything, anyway.
