Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
Titan Books, which previously published Serenity: The Official Visual Companion to the SF movie, announced that it has bought the rights to publish a companion book to Joss Whedon's cult television series Firefly, on which Serenity was based.
Firefly: The Official Companion is scheduled for publication this summer.
Wow. I think that even beats the guy who tried to convince Save Farscape that he worked for Senator McCain and could get federal legislation passed on our behalf. Or at least federal dollars.

OK, I've been working on the hugest meara of all time, going back to Sept 30, but I just am not going to get it done.
So, quick thoughts:
The tombstones were Chinese, putting photos of the dearly departed on the grave markers. Since there were about two words of Chinese in the whole movie, I don't know why they went this way. The rocks are a Jewish thing, so I guess it was more of the mixing cultures. Besides, where would they get flowers?
Everyone looked so much older. It made me sad.
Either Morena Baccarin had completely forgotten how to be Inara, or Inara's character was changed on purpose.
I don't care if Simon's agreed to have sex with Kaylee, he's still not straight. But I'm happy for Kaylee.
How does a planet of 30 million people go away and no one notice?
OK, so Miranda has a blue sun. But no mention of Blue Sun Corporation in the movie. Also no hands-of-blue guys (which is fine with me).
Has anyone, like, I dunno, Focus on the Family, gone all Kitten on Joss for killing the happily married straight white man?
The Alliance soldiers, esp at the end after the Reaver Siege, reminded me of Paranoia, the RPG. They looked just like an illustration from that game.
And, since I watched it on DVD, has anyone else seen the outtake of Nathan embroidering his lines at Haven? I laughed so hard I cried. Of course, that was probably partially an emotional release.

Besides, where would they get flowers?You see this in the US too (and I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is among non-Chinese from the names I'm seeing on the headstones, in a community made up overwhelmingly of people from western Euro descent). I also don't care for that either, but the moving picture quality of it in Serenity took tacky to a whole new level, and took me out of what I think would have been a more emotion-evoking scene (for me). I'm acquainted with the rocks (in fact do this myself). I just thought the scene sucked, when it had so much potential to be great. Thinking it sucked had nothing to do with not being familiar with pictures on headstones or leaving rocks. It just cheapened what could have been a visually stark scene.

With loads of time between watcing FF and seeing the film, I thought movie!Simon read totally straight. But he was more appealing regardless of orientation, because he didn't seem so...I don't know...pointless, as he struck me during the series.

I'm not sure I understand this comment. There's a pretty big Christian constituency of FF/Serenity, fwiw. I've seen plenty of Buffistas (including myself) be disappointed that one half of a healthy, happy, sexy couple was killed off, though. Between his death and Book's, I'm far less interested in seeing more.

I watched most of the bonus thingies after I watched the DVD. I can't remember this. Do you remember where it was, Raq?

Miranda was a viable planet, and apparently not all that long ago. The Reavers weren't there until after the Paxocaust. Presumably someone in the 'verse had family on Miranda, or business partners, or something.
I could be looking for continuity where there's none, but if the Alliance was originally the core worlds of the system, and Miranda is on the edge of the system (either stated or implied when discussing the Reaver Belt), Alliance control of it would have happened post-Unification (in the absence of any statement to the contrary). Unification happened in the not-too-distant past.

It was a sideways slam at the Kittens. People got so freaking weird about Tara's death, with the whole "Joss hates lesbians" thing, and while many folks seem disappointed about the destruction of the Hot Married Couple, I haven't seen a big internet rage of "Joss hates married men." The comment wasn't supposed to be about FF/Serenity or Christian fans as much as it was me saying again how irrational the whole Tara thing was.
The thing with Nathan was towards the end of the Outtakes section. Here's the description: Mal's doing his planning walk through the remnants of Haven, tosses Simon the rope and instructs him and Zoe to gather some bodies. "Put Reverend Book front and center; he was our friend, we should honor him." Then to Kaylee, "Find that little kid who's taking a dirt nap, you know, the baby Jesus. We need a hood ornament." Jewel can't keep a straight face at that. Then Nathan shouts to Jayne, "Hey Jayne! Try not to steal all their shit!"

I work in an area that's pretty rocky that also has flowers. I'm sure that can still happen in the future. And I'm not talking cacti or sage either. Or, for a special occasion, I could get them from somewhere else.

My take is Miranda was straight-up settled by the Alliance with a specific purpose. We see buildings and infrastructure that are associated in the 'verse as "Central Planet", rather than "Border Moon". The Alliance setup Miranda to one be a testing ground for the pax, and two, be a staging ground for upcoming Unification. If the pax was successful, they could just supply special new filtration systems to the Independant planets and there would be no need for a war. If it failed, they'd still have a base of operations on the far side of the Independant sphere, making dealing with inevitable resistance easier.
