Here is a thing.
Many Browncoats would like to live in a world in which Independents are the good guys. We sense that people who have accepted indoctrination into the mainstream are dangerous in their numbers, even if they are sorta lame as individuals.
Then I get pissed.
Let me ask you this: Who died in Serenity? Why were they the most Independent people?
