For some reason this makes me think of a Kids in the Hall sketch. A woman is talking about a guy in her high school: "I thought he was gay, but it turned out he was a genius."

I definitely think that's what both the writing and actor were trying to make clear. I'm perfectly willing to accept an argument that he gives off gay vibes, though, whether intentionally or not.
