Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains

Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.

Embrace the idea that we are the leaders we've been looking for. Grace Lee Boggs

The two favorite episodes of almost everyone polled are OIS and Out of Gas. Most true fans know that Out of Gas was Tim's baby.

Wrod. Joss even talks about how OoG was his favorite ep, and how he didn't write or direct it. Firefly, indeed OoG, is the origin of my Tim admiration. If I ever thought it was all Joss, that changed my mind. Having said that, I'm perfectly happy to blame Marti for BtVS problems. I tried not to blame her too much at first, but in the commentaries, she raved about most of the things I didn't like in the series. And also, Point Pleasant ruined any cred she had for me.

Now tagless for your comfort.

Out of Gas still makes me cry. Damn that button.

move out and draw fire

That article Wolfram linked to addresses the upthread discussion. I paraphrase Joss : "There isn't anything on screen in BtVS or AtS that I had nothing to do with."

And there are entire episodes of “Buffy” that I have written every word of that my name is not on.

Which ones, I wonder?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Which ones, I wonder?

Famously, "Lover's Walk."

Dan Vebber was credited, but because of scheduling difficulties they couldn't bring Juliet back to play Drusilla. Joss rewrote the whole thing in one weekend, shacked up in a motel room with Husker Du and Replacement tapes.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Isn't that un-surprising for a showrunner? [edit: the fingers in pie and uncredited eps, not the Husker Du]

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

FWIW, I just got this reply to my email to Dragon*Con:

------ According to the information that I have from Universal Studios, Joss will be at Dragon*Con 2005.

-- Brenda Tackett Office Manager -------

There's a miscommunication somewhere here...

Isn't that un-surprising for a showrunner?

Completely unsurprising. Unless you're Aaron Sorkin.

There's also half a season of Angel that Tim wrote, without credit. Though that was long before he was a showrunner.

Ankh-Morpork Watchman, Dreamer, Scooby, Minister of Grace, Still Flyin' in a Zoo2 World

Not knowing anything other than what I've read on some boards, I think there was a communications mixup between Universal and Joss.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

From the interview:

If somebody wrote something, and it was right, I’d never change it, because I am too lazy. There are producers who need to control everything and I needed to control exactly what needed controlling, and if somebody could get it done I would walk away faster than you could see me. Like I was Bugs Bunny. There would just be smoke in the shape of where I was.

Which I think is important to remember. There were writers who didn't get rewritten, who were left alone to do good, solid work. Which is very different from some fan perspectives that JOSS DID IT ALL AND EVEN HELD THE BOOM.

Not knowing anything other than what I've read on some boards, I think there was a communications mixup between Universal and Joss

My theory is that Universal says yes to things and doesn't tell Mike. And then it doesn't go on the calendar. And if it isn't on the calendar, then it just doesn't exist.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

Aye, I believe Allyson might be onto something there.

Allyson: you are far too polite elsewhere on t'internet. I wonder if somebody has hacked your userid?! Those 'Allyson' posts don't sound like you.
