Allyson was just simply saying the show didn't work for her. I'd dare say she felt similar when tavella was doubting The Inside would get off the ground.

Oh yeah. I wanted to go through the screen, not so much about The Inside, but the speculation on why Fury left LOST. It felt oddly personal and I was like, "dude, you're treating my friend like he's a fictional character whose motives you can speculate upon like he doesn't exist as a person."

I think I'm sort of leaning in Allyson's direction. I'm excited about the movie. Okay, fairly insanely excited about the movie, and even a little hopeful about the trilogy thing.

But I honestly thingk that episodic tv was its real format. I think the stories that would have been told suited that format, as they don't quite fit, as they've had to be abbreviated, modified and adapted to fit the theatre screen. Further, I think the gestalt of the show was something that's impossible to recreate, and while I realize that it would also have been impossible to sustain indefinitely, that while it did sustain it would have produced more amazing tv.

I look at BSG, and other sci-fi tv, and see "hand-held" fx shots, hear Firefly music influences, and realize that those shows' audiences never know that Joss' Firefly team pioneered those things. If the series had gone on, I'm sure it would have garnered a larger audience. I hope the film is a huge success. But as good as it is, it's never going to be as satisfying as the first two or three full seasons would have been, for me.

I think it's insane that Joss got the movie made. Insane. And wonderful. I'm with Beverly, though, and Allyson -- in fact, I don't really care if new people start to love Firefly because of Serenity. I want my fix. But ... as a movie franchise? Getting a new long story every few years? If that means people are going "Fuck, Joss, how wrong were we???" then my told-you-so side will feel vindicated. But I want the show on my TV. And I accept that's never happening.

So the movie is gravy. Tasty, not-too-salty, full-of-meaty-juices gravy is what I'm hoping for. But still, gravy.

I think that's my break point, also. I'll go to the movie, I might even go twice. I'll undoubtedly buy the DVD when it comes out to add to the series DVDs. But I really wanted the show to go longer. I miss it. Not just the characters, but the show, the format, the episodicness.

I'm very excited about Serenity the movie. But I agree that in many ways I prefer television done well to movies done well, because you get all that fabulous time to work with. Movie angst, for instance, doesn't draw me as much as television angst, because I don't have time to get attached to the characters before OMG the PAIN starts. Gradual reveals, slow builds to catastrophe: those I love.

So I'm jazzed about Serenity, because we get more Firefly. But I do see why people would be less than completely enthusiastic about it because it's a movie. Me, I see it as more Firefly, and am happy for that, if not content.

Joss--and others--have said repeatedly that they don't expect the movie to spark interest in reviving Firefly as a series. And what I said about not being able to recreate the gestalt is a big reason why. The cast, the crew, the sets, the writing, the tech...everything was working.

The actors and the designers and the office staff and writers and the grips and the casting people, music people, costume people--everyone has gone on to other things. Part of the cumulative creative effort was the newness of the idea, the concept, and that's not there any more.

It's still a beloved project, in movie form. But, well, "not perfect. Still good."

Anyway, there's no connection to Allyson on THE INSIDE and Allyson on SERENITY except as comparison/contrast.

The passive/agressive comment came from seeing the "I'm tired of the hype" or "Firefly was an abusive boyfriend" (paraphrases) comments when the Firefly movie or fandom commentary on same comes up. These don't criticize the movie per se, but they do kind of piss in the wheaties of anyone psyching themselves up for the movie.

I wouldn't let Allyson's relationship to Firefly affect your breakfast food any. Why should it? Her loving The Inside isn't going to help me love it, and her not having an interest in Serenity doesn't mean I'm not terribly looking forward to its opening. Why should it? We're not conjoined at the brain.

She hasn't told you not to like it, or criticised you for being excited has she? Even implicitly?

Here's the thing:

Allyson has as much right to be less-than-completely-enthusiastic about Firefly as, say, Jessica or Burrell does. Her position in the fandom doesn't deprive her of her opinion, nor should it chill her exercise of that opinion.

I've gotten a lot of crap about saying publicly how disappointed I was in Farscape S4, and so did Maayan and others involved in the Save Farscape campaign. I don't care. Just because people know your name doesn't mean you have to wear a muzzle.
