Oh, to live in Julia's world...
She just came over and said to me, "Mommy, when I'm a teenager, and I have a boyfriend and a cell phone, if I want to break up with him, I'm just gonna call him up and say, 'We're breaking up'." Then she flipped her toy phone closed.
I said, "Oh, you don't do that."
"You don't?"
"No. Not that you can't break up with boys. You can and will. But you have to recognize they have feelings that could be hurt."
"Okay, then I'll call up and say, 'Sorry, but I have a new boyfriend, now'."
I said, "Well, you really shouldn't break up with someone on the phone. You do it in person, and you say something like, 'I'm sorry, but I don't think this is working out between us. I think we should stop dating'."
"Oh. Okay. Did you ever break up with any boys, Mommy?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"I don't know. I think I did the breaking up with most of the boys I dated," I said.
"Well yeah," she laughed. "It would be pretty *sad* if a boy ever broke up with a girl!"
"Oh no, Julia. Boys break up with girls all the time, too. It's probably pretty even."
"Oh, I *don't* think so, Mommy. I don't think so."
