Someone asked about good companies for renters' insurance. I really like State Farm. Of course, you can't get State Farm in MA, so that may be part of my frustration. But, I always had wonderful luck with them the rest of my life.

Tom has an agent, who did the dirty work (comparing rates and benefits) for him. Apparantly Massachusetts Fair Coverage Co. (or something like that- basically an insurance company that exists to provide high risk people with insurance) is the only one who will insure us Somervillians at a decent price. Which surprised the agent, since that company is usually the Last Resort, thus more expensive. But the premiums are 30-50% less. Weird.

Shots of slushy cheap vodka were actually much easier than shots of liquid cheap vodka.

I have Commerce Insurance for my car. Like I said earlier, though, no renters' insurance for students in MA. Which I just think is the DUMBEST. LAW. EVAH. And when I have time to deal with it, I just might make some calls and write some nasty letters.

Pricing insurance is very weird. But if they're the Last Resort in other lines of property casualty insurance, they may not have a lot of renters insurance policies out there--or the people who insure with them have fewer losses--resulting in lower premiums. Who knows. But price is the best way to shop for insurance (so says my hubby).

You're going to want to address those letters to the insurance commission of MA. I'm curious why no renters insurance for students--is it just that company? It may actually be a bad risk for some companies. But no company offers it, that's just insane.

If you're thinking about renters' insurance, a lot of times the best place to start is to call whoever you have your car or other insurance through - generally they'll give you a deal for having multiple policies.

Massachusetts, apparently, or vw's insurance co. anyway, appears to be smoking crack, so I guess that won't help there.

I was the one asking about insurance companies. My car insurance is through Geico--did you know a lot of insurance companies won't insure a car as old as mine?--and Geico goes to a third party for renters insurance, at least in Utah. I checked their online quote for $20,000 property and $20,000 liability, and they want $300 a year. I think I'll check around. I don't think State Farm works in Utah, but I'll check.
