Are you perhaps behind a firewall that is messing with FTP services.
Nope (at least, not one that's ever blocked any other FTP programs I've used). My guess is that Apple moved the built-in FTP somewhere else in Tiger, as they seem to have done with a lot of things.
Off to Google, then...
I found that the ftp through my OSX can get to the ftp server only if it is not behind a redirector. For instance, if you FTP to ftp.netscape.com, you get redirected to one of it's number sites, but OSX 10.3.9 gives a -43 error. however, if I ftp to ftp6.netscape.com it goes through.
Yeah, the FTP services from the finder are not perfect, but they are free. I'm also comfy on the Unix Terminal so I'll do 'get' and 'put' from there as well. That one gives you much more control over your transfers, but you have to want to type in commands. Over the years I've found that Fetch is worth every penny if you do any FTP work on a Mac. I don't remember it being very expensive.
Fetch is $25 (With a fifteen day free trial) for single user. Schools and non-profits can apply for free licensing.
See if the install disk boots.
It also could be a failing Power supply or loose power cable on the hard drive.
Thanks for these suggestions, Daniel. I'll give them a try when I return.
ND, when I get back, if none of the other fixes work, do you still have an extra power supply we can try throwing in here to see if that's the problem?
Has anyone seen/used a bluetooth headset with Caller ID? Now, if they could also have one that tells you if you have voicemail waiting, I'd be golden.
As is -- I'm wondering -- does it work with all phones? What other info might the phone be sending to the headset that's going unused?

I guess you're supposed to look at the display before you put the headset on your ear, but it still seems little less useful than intended to me, 'cuz how do you look at your own ear?
I guess since I don't use an earpiece at all, I'm just far enough behind on the cell phone curve that I'm not earpiece savvy.
I don't keep the headset in my ear when I'm not on a call, unless I just haven't gotten around to putting it away yet. I do know people who wear them around their necks, so very useful for them. Me, I use them to make calls and not answer them -- I reach for the phone when it rings, so I can tell who it is. If the headpiece told me, I might reach for that instead. I do prefer taking the calls that way, after all.
