So, oh brilliant buffistechnologists (buffistechnologistas?), I did a quick search online, and it looks like I'm SOL if I want to watch the Serenity trailer using Quicktime on my Linux computer. Does this sound right, or did I give up too soon? Suggestions?

You are not SOL. mplayer will play those quicktime files quite nicely if you download them using a direct link. Whatever distribution you use probably has an mplayer package just waiting to be installed however you install packages, if it's not already installed.
If you have problems viewing the QT movie even with mplayer, I can try to make some suggestions, or you could just watch this XviD reencode I made instead.

Okay, here's a hypothetical question.
Let's say that someone had something on her dvr (let's call it a commercial) and she needed to get it off her dvr and onto her powerbook (let's say to put it on the internet). Burning it to DVD doesn't work because the powerbook won't recognize the DVD.
I'm assuming that there's some video capture thing that needs to be bought but, being that it's a laptop, and that I am new to this mac thing, I don't know where to start looking. I mean, I googled but it was of little help.
Anyone have any ideas?

Huh. Well, the question to start with is, what kind of DVR? And what software did you use to TRY burning it onto DVD? Or do you have an external DVD burner? If you have an external DVD burner, does the DVD work in other DVD players, because that could be easy to fix...
EDIT: Also, if you're still around, and you want to work faster, might be easier to work through something like AIM if you have such available.

I'm looking for any recommendations for a Visual Basic book for me. I'm a fairly skilled user of database software, like Access and Filemaker. But I'm getting to the point that when I want to tweak my databases, I know there's some programming I could probably do to get the damn thing to do what I want but I jsut don't know the commands. Any suggestions?

That link just completely fucked over my Firefox installation. I don't know what it did, but I got a nasty error message, and now Firefox won't start because it say my default profile is in use, despite the fact that the program isn't running.
