Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

She said that Bianca Lawson had been extensively coached in a really rare dialect spoken only by about 500 people on an island in the caribbean

What I'd heard was that it was supposed to be a Jamaican accent. In fact, I think in the episode commentary, they mention it explicitly.

And it's NOT.

eta: From Bianca in SFX:

"I really hated that accent! I got the part, and I didn't originally have an accent. Then, literally the night before, they said, "What about a Jamaican accent?" So it's one of those things where, y'know, I just had to put it on tape, but I didn't have a chance to get comfortable with it. And the thing is, certain things - if you say it properly [in Jamaican patois], people don't really fully understand it, so they would change things. They'd say, "Well, say it like this" and it's like, "Would that be accurate in that accent though?" "It doesn't matter because no-one's going to understand you!" So different people were giving their interpretations of it. I was like "But everyone's going to think that I'm doing it wrong!" So personally, I wasn't happy with the accent!"

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Huh. Then I wonder where this story about the tiny island dialect came from.

Even if it were accurate, it sounds absurd. ::handwaves::

Frankly, Kendra's clothing offended me more than her accent did. Heh.

All is well that ends in pizza.

Huh. Then I wonder where this story about the tiny island dialect came from.

My guess? It was a fanwank or rumor that was later stated as fact, and then the origin was lost.

I do believe in killing the messenger, you know why? Because it sends a message. ~ Damon Salvatore

Oh, it's the whole international date line thing, isnt' it? Wait a minute, Hawaii is on OUR side of the line. Huh. Maybe the island has wacked space-time continuum, on top of OMGWTF POLAR WEAR, creepy French zombie women, and invisiblemechasaurs.

yeah...the Fuselage is on GMT time. just like beta.

people are bashing Evangeline Lilly's acting skills? are you kidding? i think she's awesome. especially since this is her first real acting gig.

And talented

The man has always given something extra to the line

posting from the FUTURE!!

And did we mention, also HOTT!!?!

hee! like i told him last night, he's good people.

Yeah, as cool as it is that the actors post there, that format SUCKS THE BIG ONE. Plus, they're liable to spoil!

see, that format is what i've grown to know and love. though i will be the first to admit that the posters there are extremely childish. i have been attempting to bring some kind of modicum of maturity there, but i have a feeling it's a lost cause. i had to smack down someone last night as a matter of fact.

IN re: DDK's accent being "off," DH emigrated to the US when he was four.

actually DDK said at the Fuselage that he was two when his family emigrated here.

Someone should tell DDK about the internet criticisms of Glenn Quinn's "fake Irish accent" back when Angel first started. Apparently, there were people who thought David Boreanaz did a better job.

Oh. My. Dog.

Who could possibly have thought that? Glenn Quinn didn't just have an Irish accent, he had a Dublin accent. I could never understand how DB could keep up the ridiculous Oirish accent when he'd clearly heard how it should sound.

Yes, I got that. My point was that immigrants continue to speak their native language the way they spoke it last in situ, while the language itself continues to evolve and change. So that when native speakers hear immigrants speaking their frozen-in-time version, it no longer sounds "authentic."

If anyone's interested, there's a good and non-spoilery interview with JJ Abrams here (under "recent programs").

Frankly, Kendra's clothing offended me more than her accent did. Heh

Now all I can think of is Kendra saying "That was me favorite shirt! That was me ONLY shirt!"

Trust my rage

What I'd heard was that it was supposed to be a Jamaican accent. In fact, I think in the episode commentary, they mention it explicitly.

I think in the commentary, whoever is doing it says they did have a special coach come in and teach her this very specific accent of this very specific place. I think, perhaps, it was supposed to be a very specific part of Jamaica, but I'd have to go listen again to be sure.

Yeah, that's what Marti said, I'm pretty sure.
