I read that too. I accepted it without question because I can be that way.

What I'd heard was that it was supposed to be a Jamaican accent. In fact, I think in the episode commentary, they mention it explicitly.

And it's NOT.

"I really hated that accent! I got the part, and I didn't originally have an accent. Then, literally the night before, they said, "What about a Jamaican accent?" So it's one of those things where, y'know, I just had to put it on tape, but I didn't have a chance to get comfortable with it. And the thing is, certain things - if you say it properly [in Jamaican patois], people don't really fully understand it, so they would change things. They'd say, "Well, say it like this" and it's like, "Would that be accurate in that accent though?" "It doesn't matter because no-one's going to understand you!" So different people were giving their interpretations of it. I was like "But everyone's going to think that I'm doing it wrong!" So personally, I wasn't happy with the accent!"

My guess? It was a fanwank or rumor that was later stated as fact, and then the origin was lost.

Someone should tell DDK about the internet criticisms of Glenn Quinn's "fake Irish accent" back when Angel first started. Apparently, there were people who thought David Boreanaz did a better job.

Who could possibly have thought that? Glenn Quinn didn't just have an Irish accent, he had a Dublin accent. I could never understand how DB could keep up the ridiculous Oirish accent when he'd clearly heard how it should sound.

Yes, I got that. My point was that immigrants continue to speak their native language the way they spoke it last in situ, while the language itself continues to evolve and change. So that when native speakers hear immigrants speaking their frozen-in-time version, it no longer sounds "authentic."
