She wasn't in A Knight's Tale
I am sooo embarrassed. That was Shannyn Sossamon.
However, I shall hastily rebound to claim that any actor who can be mistaken for another actor is not a Star. Of course, this wipes out Kirsten Dunst and Reese Witherspoon, but I'm good with that.
Keira Knightly is a hot property, but not a star. Cruise can get a movie made just by agreeing to be in it. That's a true star (to the Studios--not to me. I think he's blah). They greenlight his pictures because people will go to a "Tom Cruise" movie here and in Europe and Latin America. He is the deciding factor--not the plot or genre or director.

Did you go to the Halle Berry School of Accepting Responsibility?
Which makes me think ... why isn't Denzel a star? My brain keeps telling me he's one (never mind what my loins are saying), but box office just doesn't match up.
Did you go to the Halle Berry School of Accepting Responsibility?
Yes. It was all my agent's fault.
Has Denzel done any popular candy movies? (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, that genre)
why isn't Denzel a star?
1. He isn't a franchise guy, to date.
2. He doesn't throw as much shit at walls as some; but it sticks better come Oscar time.
3. Stop me before I fall into elaborate throw/stick rate thinly-disguised ERA metaphors.
Has Denzel done any popular candy movies?
Possible candidates include:
The Siege, Crimson Tide, The Bone Collector.
He also has
The Preacher's Wife
under his belt in the romance category, but that was a black movie, so it counts for half.
Wait!
Training Day!
It was his biggest opener too.
I'd just assumed he was bankable in the general market. But I think he has a) critical acclaim b) the ability to put black butts in the seats c) heartthrob status. But that's all.
Millions of men would like to be so unlucky, but still.
Earned Run Average. For all values where the shit being thrown = horsehide, and the sticking to a wall = not being hit out of the park.
