Betsy, I'd add Renee Zellwegger as box office bait.
Lately, I'd say Zellwegger isn't in the same class as Cruise or Roberts, if she ever was. And though Sean is usually a big draw, I wouldn't put him on that list either.
Which is so far leaving me with a list with all of two people on it.

These days I think it's less about the star and more about the franchise. When's the last time anyone in Spiderman or X Men opened a movie on the basis of their name? Not that they aren't really talented people, just that grabbing something with potential for sequels is better than grabbing a name.
Well, perhaps not better, but it's easier to plan for, I think.

I think Keanu is close to being on the list, but not quite. Constantine only opened in second place. If it had won its weekend, I'd say he'd made it.

I think Keanu is riding a franchise right now, too. Sure, I hated Reloaded and Retreaded, but Matrix is still ooh-ahh-recognisable.
Will Smith bounces around from genre to genre, does some stinkers, and doesn't seem to be paying the price.
Kinda creepy.

I'd also say that Jim Carrey is sliding off the list, but I don't think he's left it entirely yet. He'll need, if not a bomb, a few poor openings to be able to tell for sure.

Did Bruce Almighty do well? Looking at imdb, that was the last movie that Carrey carried (heh) -- I mean, Lemony Snicket is Lemony Snicket, and the Eternal Sunshine audience saw it in spite of him, no?
