Buffista Movies 3: Panned and Scanned

A place to talk about movies--Old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Up with the sun

Of course, maybe he was just being pretentious.

If the question involves Jim Morrisson, this is *always* the answer.

For those interested, and in honor of the third Buffista movie thread, here is a list of Buffista favorites from the first two (to be included, a film had to be supported (relatively) enthusiastically by at least five Buffistas).

The list is obviously selective based on what conversations occurred. Also, you'll probably notice some absent titles. I tended to not include favorites that had significant dissenters, such as some new releases and (totally agreeing here) A Clockwork Orange and Moulin Rouge.

Aliens, American Splendor, Annie Hall, Bend It Like Beckham, Big Fish, The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, Blood Simple, The Bourne Identity, Brazil, The Breakfast Club, Bring It On, Bringing Up Baby, Bull Durham, Casablanca, Chasing Amy, Chicken Run, Chinatown, Clueless, Cold Comfort Farm, The Commitments, The Crying Game, The Cutting Edge, Dead Again, Death Becomes Her, Dirty Dancing, Dirty Pretty Things, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Dogma, Donnie Darko, Ed Wood, The Emperor's New Groove, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Excalibur, Fight Club, Finding Nemo, Flash Gordon (1981), The Frighteners, Ginger Snaps, The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, Gosford Park, Groundhog Day, Hannah and Her Sisters, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Heathers, Heavenly Creatures, Hellboy, Henry V (1989), High Fidelity, His Girl Friday, Holiday, Housesitter, In America, It Happened One Night, It's a Wonderful Life, The Italian Job (1969), The Italian Job (2003), Jackie Brown, Jaws, Joe vs. the Volcano, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, Lawrence of Arabia, A League of Their Own, Lilo and Stitch, The Limey, The Lion in Winter, Looking For Richard, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Lost in Translation, Love Actually, M, The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Manhattan, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Matrix, A Mighty Wind, Monsoon Wedding, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Much Ado about Nothing (1993), Near Dark, Nightmare Before Christmas, North by Northwest, Notorious, Notting Hill, Nurse Betty, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Ocean's Eleven, The Others, Out of Sight, Persuasion, The Philadelphia Story, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pitch Black, Pleasantville, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, The Quiet American (2002), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ran, Real Genius, Rear Window, The Ref, Reservoir Dogs, The Ring, Say Anything, School of Rock, Secretary, The Seven Samurai/Shichinin no samurai, The Shawshank Redemption, Shrek 2, Silverado, Singin' in the Rain, The Sixth Sense, Sneakers, Solaris (2002), Some Like It Hot, South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, Speed, Spirited Away/Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Wars, The Station Agent, Strictly Ballroom, The Sweet Hereafter, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Third Man, This is Spinal Tap, Three Kings, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tombstone, Touch of Evil, The Transporter, Tremors, 24-Hour Party People, 28 Days Later, Undercover Brother, Unforgiven, Velvet Goldmine, Waiting for Guffman, The Warriors, Whale Rider, The Whole Wide World, The Wicker Man, The Women, Wonder Boys, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Young Frankenstein, Zoolander

ETA: I realize it's hard to read but I thought the list was too long to put one movie on each line.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Can I be a significant dissenter? I can totally prune that list.

Oh, I could be too, believe me. But I restrained myself and just went based on what people said in thread when the film came up.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

and (totally agreeing here) A Clockwork Orange and Moulin Rouge.

What? Stop hatin' on Moulin Rouge, or I punch you in the face. I also like A Clockwork Orange, but not enough to punch you over it.

Just because I saw another preview for this just now:

I want to see Hal and Kumar go to White Castle. It could suck, but it could be fun.

I'd totally punch people over A Clockwork Orange. It's the least tribute I could pay it.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I want to see Hal and Kumar go to White Castle. It could suck, but it could be fun.

The preview is very funny (for a preview).

Hopefully they didn't blow their wad on the preveiw....

Early reviews are actually really good. I'm intrigued.

The best part is the cop going, "'Kumar'? So that's got like what, five u's and three a's...?"

I've been hearing a lot of early good things about it too. Plus, I love that the writers just wanted to make a movie with people that looked like their friends.
