A place to talk about movies--Old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

Wow, I'm with NovaChild on this one. The Shining movie: kick ass. The Shining book: shit on a stick. The Shining tv movie: has that guy from Wings. And Rebecca De Mornay. Which means I'll never, ever see it. But, y'know, to each his (or her) own tastes.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

It should be noted that I'm not anti-Kubrick. I'm a fan of A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. I haven't seen 2001 more than once, which means I have no fucking clue what it's about. Eyes Wide Shut was slow, but I didn't hate it. I liked the look of it.

I also tend to like ABC King adaptations.

Seeing it more than once doesn't help with the understanding, but I'm one of those odd people who actually like 2001.

I liked the monkeys, and I liked HAL.

That should have been the whole movie. HAL mocking the monkeys. That would have ruled.

Actually, in a twisted way, that is kinda the whole movie. But then I tend to view 2001 as one of the most deadpan comedies of all time, so that will give you my perspective on it. Bone dry humor (I mean, seriously - Tempe, AZ dry), but humor nonetheless.

Ann, that's a ferret.

The Shining book: shit on a stick.

I've never seen any movie version, but the book does have the kid asking the old man, "Why does that lady want that man's pants?"

The generation that could change the world is still looking for its car keys.

The Shining is overrated.

See, I thought this too, until I watched the full, unedited for television version. Somehow, I had only ever seen it cut to pieces. Much freakier on DVD.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Oh, absolutely. (Well, except for that half hour towards the end where Kubrick got distracted by how cool the color key effect was.)

Whoa. You're...right. Huh.

Hm. I don't remember which version I saw. I think it was on a premium channel, years ago.

"Oooh, shiny, shiny colors. And trails...TRAILS!!"

Well, it WAS the 60s. I'm amazed at how much of it holds up. The scene after the stargate is still pretty freaky after all these years.
