See, I thought this too, until I watched the full, unedited for television version. Somehow, I had only ever seen it cut to pieces. Much freakier on DVD.

Well, except for that half hour towards the end where Kubrick got distracted by how cool the color key effect was

Well, it WAS the 60s. I'm amazed at how much of it holds up. The scene after the stargate is still pretty freaky after all these years.
But then I tend to view 2001 as one of the most deadpan comedies of all time, so that will give you my perspective on it.

YES! and YES! Although, we go back to the deadpan humor for a bit after the stargate sequence. The looks that Keir Dullea gives himself each time he spots himself are priceless.

Yeah, there's full frontal nudity, and quite a lot of "fuck"s in the unedited version.

I really don't remember. I think so, though I may be making it up since I know there's someone in the tub. I really don't think I saw it with commercials.
I think The Shining is the only time I've been able to like a Kubrick movie. In some ways it's a wee bit OTT, but in others, it works the cool, slow camera in good ways. And, yeah, it's its own movie, very different from the book, and I don't know if the book could possibly be made into a movie with any kind of suspense.
Of course, both book and movie feature a Clairvoyant Magical Black Guy, but Kubrick, being Kubrick, makes a nasty joke out of his presence.
You didn't like Dr. Strangelove or Full Metal Jacket, Nutty?
Those both rank pretty high on my favorite movies list.
A Clockwork Orange is a huge favourite of mine. Also the first time I saw Singing In The Rain choreographed onscreen. Gives me a bit of problem immersing myself in the musical.
I need to watch that again.

Try seeing it on a double bill with Apocalypse Now. On about 5 hits of acid.
