Buffista Movies 3: Panned and Scanned

A place to talk about movies--Old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

"But the rug tied the room together!"

It does grow on you. The first time I saw it, I thought it was reasonably funny; the second time I found myself giggling helplessly. Now, I make sure I'm never without the ingredients for a White Russian.

I look more rad than Lutheranism

I don't fucking bowl on the Shabbos!

Best use of Gabriel Byrne ever.

I'm sorry, the correct answer is: Stigmata.

Or maybe the ex-Catholic in me still has a thing for hot priests.

"This is what it's like to meet a stranger in the Alps!"

That's very "Yippee Kaiyay, Mister Falcon."

I think my personal favorite re-edit for TV was for a broadcast of Ghostbusters which included first a redub to something along the lines of "Everything was fine until the power grid was shut off by monkey breath over here."

When the mayor asks Venkman "Is this true," they included a whole different take, with Murray looking straight at the camera as he says, "Yes, it's true. This man resembles some kind of animal, I don't know what."

"Nihilists? Man. Say what you will about National Socialism, Dude. At least it's an ethos."

If I only had a brain...

Which reminds me, a newspaper I was reading today replaced "dick" (what Jon Stewart said about Tucker Carlson) with "[male pride]".

Male pride?

That sounds like some sort of automated replacement, like the computer only saw the word, and had no way to render the context of its censorship.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Um, being a dick is related to being prideful? Yeah, I got nothing.

But my personal favorite swear dub is "mickey fickey," as often seen in Spike Lee movies. "Mickey fickey you!"

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I'm sorry, the correct answer is: Stigmata.

The only question to which the correct answer is Stigmata is "What was the worst movie of 1999?"

Matt and I are matter and anti-matter when it comes to movies. If we ever agree on one we both like, the world may explode.

I don't think Stigmata was a *great* movie, but it intrigued me. I thought it was good. Freaky and weird, but good.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I disliked The Phantom Menace more, just off the top of my head. At least Stigmata didn't ruin the pretty.
