I'd include The Producers with these two.
I'd elevate
The Producers
well above those two, but then I am in deep and helpless thrall to
The Producers.
(eta: Not to speak ill of his performances in the other two, which are quite fine, but...
The Producers!
Like I said, thrall.)
Have you seen the musical? I wouldn't have believed it possible, but the stage version is even funnier than the movie.
Perhaps you've repressed it. It is a disturbing film.
True, but Roald Dahl was very unhappy with the film because he felt it wasn't dark
enough. Given the crew working on this one, I think they'll turn out a version Dahl would've approved of more.
It came to SF but was (a) freakin' expensive and (b) sold out way in advance. I think even the volunteer ushering thing was booked and waitlisted. I've heard that the musical may be even better, but some small corner of my heart will ever and always cling to Zero Mostel as the One True Bialystock.

Well yeah, but Nathan Lane was very good too.
I was lucky - a friend noticed the tickets for the Chicago preview go on sale so we got tickets before it sold out. (It previewed in Chicago before going to Broadway.)

I was unimpressed by the musical. The actress who played Ula was hysterical, but other than that, the only bits I really laughed at were the bits taken straight from the movie. And even then, I was more remembering the movie than laughing at what was onstage.

Huh. You... um... weirdo!
At least one of Gene Wilder's best performances was in
Young Frankenstien.

I was just going to say what quester said. In fact, I think it IS Wilder's best performance.
His Willy Wonka was a thing of genius though.
The thing is, Willy Wonka and Blazing Saddles are the only times he didn't play hysterical. He is FABULOUS when he isn't being hysterical.
