A year and a half ago, I could have eviscerated him with my thoughts. Now I can barely hurt his feelings. Things used to be so much simpler.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Whereupon his no-longer-bride-to-be punches him in the jaw.

Kristen Scott Thomas, right? Anybody who throws over KST for Andie MacDowell deserves at least a punch in the jaw (and I like Andie).

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

I don't like either of them, but then, I don't like Hugh Grant either.

In Ever After the prince leaves the hysterically crying Spanish princess at the altar to go marry the Drew Barrymore character.

Oh yes. But, part of the reason he can laugh and leave is that her much older, ugly boyfriend is standing in the front row, crying and reaching out for her as she cries out for him. So, the prince is doing her a favor breaking up with her, rather than breaking her heart.

(The best part is that her parents bust out in a screaming argument (In Spanish) about whose fault it all is.)

Kristen Scott Thomas, right?

Nope, Anna Chancellor. Kristin plays the friend who has secretly been in love with him all along, but she doesn't get him to the altar.

Whoot! Why did I forget that?

Plus there's that great shot from above of Hugh crumpling onto a gravestone on the church floor after the punch connects.

Compassionately intolerant

Nope, it's not KST who clobbers Hugh in 4Ws&aF. She plays the stalwart best friend who never catches his fancy.

Anna Chancellor plays the whiney ex-girlfriend, "Hen"rietta, whom Hugh finally agrees to marry.

That movie introduced me to John Hannah-love. Man, he was great.

eta: x-post!

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Duckface!

Her character was such a wackjob though. In contrast, most guys who get left at the altar by the girls tend to be decent and stodgy sorts.

Ann, that's a ferret.

I'm not sure this counts as a jilt, but what about My Best Friend's Wedding? Julia Roberts's character does not come off well at all.

But then, the only sympathetic main character (Rupert Everett) isn't involved with the wedding at all.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

The altar thing comes to mind because I saw Philadelphia Story recently. Not as deft a jilt as It Happened One Night, but I give the chick credit for being broken and only working that out as the wedding loomed -- it was less that she was marrying the wrong guy, and more that she was the wrong bride. But still -- the re-marriage was inevitable because why else cast Cary, but I didn't see it that strong textually.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

The altar thing comes to mind because I saw Philadelphia Story recently.

That's funny, because I figured it was because of the endless ads for Runaway Bride that have been playing on whatever channel is about show it.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

ita, you should see Ever After. Dougray Scott is hot.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Dougray Scott is hot.

He is that, but I'm still extremely glad that he was so busy filimg MI:2 that he couldn't take the part of Wolverine in X-Men that was offered to him.
