I ain't signing no agreements with Fox about my right to have an opinion.
The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
Rachel Nichols just keeps staring at me.
I like it.
And, look, there's an official message board now for The Inside.
I like Kevin's board better. Hmph. Official, bah.
the net-fandom dynamic amplifies everything.
Words worth repeating. There are still places in Stargate fandom, two+ years after Michael Shanks returned to the show, where you can't even mention season 6. (Okay, you can mention the three eps he appeared in, but that's it.) As in, you get kicked off the list/board for bringing up Jonas Quinn except in the context of the guy-who-got-Daniel-killed.
That kind of self-reinforcement tends to result in clusters of people with really wacky interpretations and concepts. They're way out on one end of the curve, but they don't even know, because they can't hear anyone else talking.
It's one of the reasons I tend to stay away from ship-specific and character-specific venues. t loves the Buffistas, who are only crazy in unfrightening ways
nevermind
I'm not sure as I write how much different I am from them in fierce devotion. I mean, sure, I saw a line.
I spent far too much of my personal time trying to save Firefly, for example. Two months, I think. It took it's toll on me and I definately had some bad moments where I went apeshit.
Strega once asked me if I didn't have anything better to do with my time. The answer was "no." I really didn't have anything better to do at the time, and it was an interesting project. I didn't expect the psychological toll it took on me.
I alternately felt stupid for spending much of my time and money to help save Tim and Joss, who are wealthier than I can wrap my brain around, and feeling stupid for getting so angry at a small group of cunts who did a lot of grousing about how we did things (but never stepped up to do anything themselves).
That's not where I ended up with it in my head, but it's how I felt for a long time. Foolish.
I wonder how some of those fans felt who were not allowed to transition their anger and grief into acceptance with the rest of the community. What makes it worse is that I think the reason this particular group felt such a gut punch is that for many of them, they suffered a great deal struggling with homophobia issues and felt some degree of comfort seeing a big gay love story unfold on television in a mostly healthy sort of way. I think it helped them in a degree that maybe wasn't so expected. A sort of Jackie Robinson sort of heroism existed for them. And then it was gone. So I understand that it was a painful thing to lose.
I can say, "this is a story. for 46 minutes, the job of the writer is to tell you a story. if you do not like the story, you are free to leave."
On the other hand, a story well-told should engage the audience. Should bring the audience into another world for that time. If the story is told in such a way as to compel strangers to search out others to discuss the story, then you've done your job really well as a writer, I think.
Where it all goes awry is when the fictional character becomes more important than your own real life, and your life becomes about being angry.
That I don't understand, and I don't really want to make fun of it. It seems too sad.
I am not sure I understood 'Suela's post.
However. I have her back, against all comers.
It's one of the reasons I tend to stay away from ship-specific and character-specific venues.
I dropped away from all my Spike-centric boards after I found the Buffistas. I'll take my kraxy in a well-rounded manner, not the chaos I found on the other boards.
Heh. So now we're well-controlled craxy chaos?
There's nothing creepier than FOX's disclaimer on The Inside's message board:
By posting your comments, you agree that Fox Broadcasting Company, its affiliated companies, and their successors and licensees will have the unlimited right, without charge and for no consideration, to use any portion of your comments and your first name in all media now known or hereafter created and in perpetuity [in connection with the advertising, promotion and publicity of the series or any of its episodes].
I think they should give me a little bit of consideration. I mean, really. I harness the power of the full page Variety ad, and I've been pretty considerate to them...so far.
