The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress

[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

Did the Israeli subtitler understands that the definition of "Shiny" as used on Firefly was made up?

Oh, he did. And even if he wasn't sure, he had a few people on that site making completly sure that he did.

Why not simply use the equivilent Hebrew word?

Well, there are several words that can be used as a translation to "shiny", and some of them are problematic in the variations of places in the sentence in which the word "shiny" finds itself. If I understood correctly, he'd go with one of those equivalent words, but I'm not sure which. He actually wanted to do it right and paid real attention to what the fans on that site told him, which was very nice of him.

how censorious (if that's a word) is Israeli TV?

Nothing is blipped, if that's what you're asking. No words are being changed from the versions that were shown in movie theaters. They'd put more adult shows on later hours, but if a show has a high ratings, that hour may drop closer to prime-time in order to boost the ratings even more. I think they're a bit less conscious about the language, and are also very much trying to show that they're very updated and current and "cool", so they sometimes go further than the people they're trying to imitate. Some of the commercials are banned from TV, or only allowed from a certain hour (and advertisers use this to create a hype around their commercial, in more than one time).

when you feel like you're babbling to too many people about the wonder of Firefly, tell yourself you're just telling one person for each of us.

Thanks, ellemarie! I will. Also, I'm not sure if I ever posted with you before, so a very belated welcome.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

Nilly, you might want to tell the translator that we English-speakers didn't get the Chinese expletives translated. It was funnier that way, when we could imagine pretty closely what was being said.

Beverly, he actually knows that, but according to what he said, the network is demanding that he translates every single word.

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

That should make for an interesting transcript.

Which would be funny to read. Well, except it'd be in a language I can't read. But it'd be funny anyway.

(What was the "Witch!" reference? Oh ... River in Safe? But I still don't understand. Not that it matters, really.)

Hee! Actually, I think Hebrew is very pretty visually, but I wouldn't get any meaning from it either. I like having a second language in the show, but imagine it would be even more fun to understand, knowing that not everyone would. This is a long-winded way to say how lucky those bilingual Chinese/English viewers are. Too bad for me that it's not Russian/English!

My tagline and life are a work in progress.

Also, I'm not sure if I ever posted with you before, so a very belated welcome.
Aww... thanks (belatedly)! I think you're right that we've never been around a thread at the same time. Dang time zones! I'm always very impressed that you can remember each person you've posted with before so that you can welcome all the newbies. Actually, that shouldn't surprise me at all given how obviously superior your memory is to my crappy one. But it's still very classy and part of what makes you loved immediately, even by those who haven't been around the wonder of Nilly for years. Okay, that sounds rather gushy, and yet somehow I'm thinking it's okay because you're Nilly and gushing seems to be forgiven in such circumstances.

Aw, man! Do you have the CD? Isn't it great? "Wish I" is like the happiest song ever.
I actually don't, but it's now on my list. I think I may use some of my birthday money for it. Yes, I still get birthday money. Shut up. Broadening my music library is one of the things I can credit to Wonderfalls. Speaking of which, if one, hypothetically, didn't own any XTC albums, which album, hypothetically, would you all recommend one buy first? I kind of got overwhelmed by the options. I mean, one could kind of get overwhelmed.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Okay, that sounds rather gushy, and yet somehow I'm thinking it's okay because you're Nilly and gushing seems to be forgiven in such circumstances.

It's like my eyes see the word "Nilly" and send a message to my brain to squee. Where does she get her power? There have to be goat sacrifices involved.

Broadening my music library is one of the things I can credit to Wonderfalls.

If you're buying Wonderfalls-related CDs, I suggest the Frou Frou over the Jem. It's amazinger.

Hee! It might not need to be an "or" thing so much as an "and" thing. But thank you muchly for the advice! If it does come down to picking and choosing, it will come in handy.

You know, we could experiment and cancel football.

If anyone cares, NF just posted in the Firefly OB. Link is in the Firefly thread. This has been a public service announcement.
