I wouldn't look at it that way. The dude clearly needed backup in that scene. It's not like he's a damsel in distress.

Illyria was there. Illyria and Nina were characters on Angel the show. They were part of it. Bringing in Buffy would have been, to me, very Deus ex Machina.
