I asked Kimi if she had a suggestion and she (understandably) didn't answer.
For a group gift, let's look for something and have Oxfam as a back up. I like the idea of some family somewhere far away having their lives enriched by Gus who they never actually met.
I can't find any Guy Straley in Wisconsin. So far, I've had no luck finding a Guy Straley Ph.D., either.
Is "Guy" short for something?
He said once that his Mother loved Gustav Klimt and that's how he got his name. He may have meant his board name, but maybe "Guy" came from "Gustav".
What sort of things did Gus teach? I've found a number of "Professor Straley"s and many of them are scientists with many publications.
I tried looking him up at the University of WI, because he was associated with it for a while. I don't know if he got his Ph.D. there or not, but we did have a discussion about the university's particle accelerator which he was familiar with. What his actual area of expertise was, I have no idea.
ETA: I seem to recall his house was near Cameron, WI. He'd given me driving directions there, once. Never got a chance to go visit, which makes me very sad now.
Gus was a chemical engineer.
Count me in on the no-vote remembrence thread.
Gus, you'll be missed.
Oh, could you not see me nodding? Yes, thread, no, vote.
And is Oxfam better than Heifer Intl? If so, why?
I'm going with the majority here. Yes thread, no vote, charity good.
I looked up Cameron, Wi. The county seat is Barron, the Barron News-Shield is the paper for Barron, and all of December's obituaries are listed, but Gus isn't among them. The next nearest town is Cameron. It has all of November and December's obituaries online. There's none there, either. Maybe he just didn't have an obituary?
