According to that link, anyway, nickel is not in the platinum group metals.

Huh. It ought to be. It's in the same column (which is Mendeleev's definition of a group) as palladium and platinum, and it's properties are very similar to the other two. (All three are used as hydrogenation catalysts, for example.)
