"We're a bunch of dynamically generated web pages. Read some of them to figure why we're here."
I like this.
I see bon bon's objection to our claims to intelligence and humor. Those may be valued particularly, but they should be self-evident. (I think that's her objection. It's cheesy to introduce yourself by saying, "Halloo! I'm so smart and funny! Dig my utterly brill witticisms!")
Yes, this is part of it. I mean, I don't have a huge stake in it since it's stared me in the face for two years or however long, but I don't want to just throw shit without justifying it. It's like someone saying they are cool. You are or you aren't. It should be self-evident, it just looks overly defensive and insecure up there, and it does nothing to actually distinguish us from any other board.
Whereas, if Jon's suggestion were up there when I first clicked on this site, I'd think, "hey, these people seem funny and smart."
Read our FAQ. Read our How-to. Read our bureaucracy, then run for your life.
Bwahahahahha...
I don't think the description is all that apt anymore, but I'm good with leaving it be, too. I don't feel I've been around long enough to have too much of a say with something as central as that.
I am very amused by the discussion, though. Pern!
Bwahahahahaa...
Jon's description is my favorite. Accurate, and likely to remain so.
Is that description what new people or visitors or whatnot should read to have an idea about the board?
I mean, who are we, what kind of board are we. ok - not really, that's not what I mean at all.

Huh. I was being sarcastic.
On the other hand, I'm with Liese in that I dislike change. I prefer the archeological model. It's not like you run around Harvard changing all the stone-carved "V" letters into their rounder "U" selves.
t offtopic
The Hard Rock Cafe in Boston has engraved above the entrance "MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF ROCK". It's always bugged me way more than it should that they didn't engrave "MASSACHVSETTS INSTITVTE OF ROCK".
I'm not really sure what purpose the description serves. I don't know that it was ever useful to me, personally, so it's hard to say what it ought to be.
I suggest, "A community." That should cover it.

oh oh oh, I meant to say earlier. While I can see why one would not change the building letters, I am positive that Harvard no longer describes itself as a small school for boys to be educated in the classics and Puritan traditions and beliefs.

I guess it depends on whether you see our description as an historical landmark like a stone carved building name, or a marketing description in a pamphlet.
archive it. we could probably archive half the FAQ, huh?
