Here's the e-mail WX just sent me as a forum owner:
There are some important changes afoot at World Crossing, and we wanted you to be the first to know the details about our work to improve it. This will affect both you and your forum members.
We want to continue to maintain World Crossing, develop new features, and improve the servers. But in order to do that, we need your help to bring World Crossing closer to funding itself on an ongoing basis. You have probably noticed more advertising than we've had in the past, and that has helped, but it's not enough to do what we need to.
So as of December 5, 2004, World Crossing will have two tiers of membership: free (with ads), and Premium (paid, no ads). Everyone will receive a weeklong Premium trial membership at no charge which will expire at midnight on December 12, 2004.
Premium membership costs around $1/month ($12/year) - less if you purchase two years upfront ($20/2 years). Premium members get:
- A small star icon next to their names
- No advertising
- Unlimited posts per day (free accounts are limited to 10/day)
- User pictures
- Option to "remember me" to avoid relogging in each time you visit
- Privileges (for Hosts) to move messages
- Future Premium perks currently in the planning stages
You can become a Premium member by clicking the link in your Preferences page, or by clicking on the small ad in the upper left corner of the forum pages. You can pay using PayPal, or send us a check. Once you are a Premium member, you can use the Holidays as an excuse to buy Premium gift memberships for all your friends at World Crossing!
So, for approximately the cost of a can of soda out of a vending machine, or less than a cup of coffee, you can enjoy a month of advertising-free World Crossing plus help us make this place even better. Isn't that worth it?

This already seems to be gone.
Does moving stuff afford us any benefit? Does
not
moving stuff have a point? Is it usable as a haven? We have PF (but who knows for how long?).
I'll be signed up for the "premium" for at least a year.
We haven't used it as a haven in a year and a half. People seem to prefer PF. OTOH, if PF goes under it may be our only option.
The people I've heard opine the loudest seem to dislike PF. But that's too bullshit even for consensus.
As things have gone, PF has been haven #1, with extended downtime meaning a WX opening -- but it does need the opening.
At least, that's the way I've understood the ad hoc process.
How's PF looking, fundraising wise? Are they likely to go pay anytime soon?
I don't think they'll go pay. They'll either stay optionally free, or disappear. I'm not optimistic, but willing to be surprised.
I was just noticing that this bullet in the etiquette page is incorrect.
Don't post spoilers outside the spoiler threads. We consider spoilers to be anything that has not yet been broadcast. This includes TV Guide-type listings, actors' contracts, etc. --- basically, anything that has not yet been broadcast belongs in a spoiler thread.
Taken literally, all that white font in Natter would have to go. Right now, the only place we enforce the policy is in OMGWTF and Firefly. I think.
