We're Literary 2: To Read Makes Our Speaking English Good

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

Let me just say that popularity with people on public transportation does not equal literary respect. --Jesse

Just finished Middlesex. And... I don't know what I think about it. Which is usually a good sign.

this book prompted some of the best discussion my book club has had in the 5 years or so we've been meeting. Tonight we're discussing the Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, which I enjoyed. It was very easy to read, but I thought she did a great job illustrating the main characther's alienation from both his Indian parents and mainstream America at the same time, particularly in his high school and college years.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Weren't people talking about House of the Scorpion recently? It's been optioned for a movie.

I can't even.

Has anyone else read Lewis Shiner's Say Goodbye: The Laurie Moss Story (1999)?

I had read his Deserted Cities of the Heart and Glimpses years ago, and enjoyed them both very much.

I just finished Say Goodbye tonight (after staying up until 4am last night, absorbed in it).

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

Bellwether by Connie Willis. Any of the collections of Cynthia Heimel and Calvin Trillin columns. Shirley Jackson's Life Among the Savages (The author of The Lottery being very funny).

Art Crawl!!!

When I travel I ususally pick up a fat book by Elizabeth George at the airport. I don't know why - - but it's about the only time I read her. The plus side is that I travel so infrequently that the paperback at the airport store is boudn be be one I haven't read.

Thanks all! I have taken notes.

Steph, I bought Tell me lies last night, but Polgara told me that a couple of other Crusie's were better, so I am hoping that when I am standing in front of the Crusie books, I will remember those titles.
