However, I still say that Snape & Lily were an item, and that Lily ending up with James is what caused Snape to join the Death Eaters. Love of your live just dumped you? Don't sulk in your room listening to depressing music, join up with an evil wizard!
I agree. One of the things I like about Snape is that despite the fact that he can be nasty, petty, etc., he's still risking an awful lot to work on behalf of Our Heroes. It's a nice twist to have someone be both a "Good Guy" and at the same time
not
a very nice person. In a way, I wish they hadn't cast Alan Rickman as Snape, since that voice makes it all too easy to overlook the fact that the character is supposed to be unpleasant.
Snape's hate of Harry, Our Hero, is one of the most clever things in the books. It's refreshing to have major allies dislike each other so much.

Wrod. Back on TT, someone far more clever than I defined Snape as the opposite of the Villain with the Heart of Gold: The Hero with the Heart of Crap.

Oh yeah, I love how Snape's not evil: he's just really fucking
bitter.

The more I read of Harry? The more I sympathise with Snape. Seriously, I've not seen a kid in more need of a smack upside the head.
(I also have suspicions that Dumbledore isn't as pure as we've been led to believe, but argument for that is kind of flimsy.)
I'm still enamored of the Dumbledore-is-Ron theory.
Dumbledore as Ron?
edited for right link. man, I'm tired....
Snape hating Harry has never struck me as clever. It's just...there. If I can't have a reason for it (even if it's "that's just how Snape is"), I'd at least like to know why he gets away with it in loco parentis.
If Draco's got Muggle blood in him, seems like the Malfoy side is more likely, since Narcissa's a Black and we know an awful lot about that family tree.
