I'd rather stay home and watch television. It's often funnier than killing stuff.

Boxed Set, Vol. 1: Smallville, Due South, Farscape

A topic for the discussion of Farscape, Smallville, and Due South. Beware possible invasions of Stargate, Highlander, or pretty much anything else that captures our fancy. Expect Adult Content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

I want it to keep its title as my Most Relaxing Fannish Experience Ever.

Yes, Katie! That's exactly it. Stargate is a sort of low-impact fandom for me.

PERfect descriptions. I don't have to see every episode as it airs, and I know I've missed a bunch, but that just gives a warm, fuzzy feeling of future happy when I get the DVDs and can see them all. Don't HAVE to have them NOW, DAMMIT.

Also, I'm suddenly grooving on the name Jonas for a possible future boy child (of mine). Not sure -- but I'm digging it today. Maybe too much? I dunno. I like it. Jonas.

I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Oh, I actually did fall for the show pretty hard. I just don't expect a lot from it, you know? It's not like Buffy or Angel, where a slump in quality disappoints me. With Stargate, I want basically recognizable characters who have reasonably interesting adventures and like each other most of the time, with the occasional entertainingly snarky commentary. When they do better I enjoy it, but it's really tough to feel let down by it, and if they go in a way I don't want them to I don't get all invested in the outcome.

I will say, the experience has given me a lot more sympathy for the folks who had to insulate themselves from people who were critical of the later seasons of Buffy.

OK, I know I'm being really lazy here, but ... me, too, Katie, iff'n I didn't express it that way before. The DVDs are on my wishlist and all. But it's a more comforting kind of love. Ya' know, the kind of show you can count on to be there for you in its way, and it's all good. Like a nice, easy-going good pal you wouldn't trade for the world. I can get excited about it, but I don't think I could ever be disappointed in it. It'd have to try REALLY hard for that.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

The slump in quality can sometimes be a blessing, though. I was able to let Buffy and Farscape go because my enjoyment of both had paled compared to the feeling I had early in their runs. If "Graduation Day Pt. 2" had been the last episode I would have been among those snerked-about fans taking a header from the rooftop with SMG picture in hand.

Yeah, good point. It does make it easier to say "okay, I'm ready for this to be over now."

My god! I love Jonas! The way he twigged our lovely Sam to the answer!

Yeah, that was pretty cool. "I knew you'd come up with something." I kind of wish they'd kept him too -- it's not that he was bad; actually he was kinda cool! But people aren't snowmobile parts!

It's a remora, dimwit.

Exactly. To me it's the difference between seeing someone die after a long painful illness vs. a sudden death when they'd seemed perfectly healthy. At the end of its run BtVS was like an old dog who'd developed arthritis and kidney problems and was losing teeth and could barely move, so finally it was put to sleep. It's not like it was a playful young puppy full of potential who got hit by a car - that's more of the "Firefly" experience.

Except it still had really hot superchicks. Where are the hot superchicks in your analogy, I ask you?

Even an old dog can still attract the ladies out on walks, especially during the last days when it's in one of those dog-walker devices.
