Well, they could not allow any ad libs. How anal are the writers, do we know?
Point. My sense is that some of RDA's stuff is his. But then, who's gonna argue with him? My other sense is that they, as a crew, are all about the fun. Or, have a healthy appreciation for it. I say this from listening to some of the commentaries and such. I, of course, am making them all into what I want them to be.
I foresee spoiler-control issues here.
Heh. I forsee personal issues with controlling my usual preference to not be spoiled. As I dash off to sci-fi.com...
(Edited to take out my snark at RDA. How silly am I? Very silly. I felt bad; I adore him.)
I don't think there's any freakin' way people will be able to avoid this spoiler. It's ginormous. I'm in the Spoiler thread anyway, so I'll be able to talk about it there at the very least. But I hope it's allowable discussion over here where it belongs.
I don't see why it wouldn't be allowable -- it's not even like Spike. It's a completely new cast member, and who knows in what capacity or with what impact to the current cast or plotlines.
Having never watched SG1, I gotta ask -- about the spoiler, are people surprised over the actor or the character who the actor will play? And why?
And would it be impossible for me to jump in and start watching it in S9, and yes I realize that makes me a big 'ho for the actor in question but we all knew that anyway.
I just never would have expected they'd go after that particular actor. It's sort of a case of
never the twain shall meet.

Did I miss details about the character?

Not even slightly. It's not tightly arced (although replete with callbacks to previous plot points, they rarely make or break your understanding, just enhance it), and in constant reruns.

Steph, there's no word about the character, just that the actor has been cast. I bet the writers aren't entirely sure what the character will be like. With luck, they'll talk to the actor.
As for jumping in, Stargate is not like, well, Farscape, for instance. Once you have the basic premise down, you can generally pick it up and watch most episodes without needing more than that. There is a fairly complicated premise, but the backstory isn't as complex as on Farscape or Angel. I watched the entire run of the show completely out of order, and that caused no real damage other than not being able to remember what episode happened in what season. Most of the time it doesn't really matter, except for the few big changes (Daniel's death, etc).

As long as he doesn't have an apostrophe in his name.
Hmmm. I wonder whether this would inspire
Maayan to take up World Without Milk
again. Probably not, but a girl can hope.
