I think as an actor he was often wooden in Buffy.
I dunno. I think a lot of that was the character - rigidity goes with the pent-up overcontrolled supersoldier Riley was meant to be. That said, I watched S5 for the first time since it aired last week, and he's certainly the weakest thing in it.
I've seen compelling rigidity -- there have been a number of military madness characters I've liked.
Unless they meant him to be boring and then selfish and petulant -- in which case I think he did a bang up job.

I think that they did. By the end, I kept saying -- be quiet and look pretty. that's all.
I think that they did.
So we were supposed to think that Buffy was wrong the whole time? Even I don't feel that Into The Woods was a testament to their 4EVA nature (it's like mu nature, except not), but I found Riley consistently generically unattractive once he stopped being goofy grad student, and pretty unsuitable.
So we were supposed to think that Buffy was wrong the whole time?
No, I don't think that, exactly. We were supposed to see her withdrawing into herself, and feeling that no one "gets" her. Riley assisted that by being an asshole (wah, you won't spend time with me even though you're mom's dying. wah, you don't "need" me. wah, since you don't need me, I'm going to find someone who does -- a vamp to suck my blood, etc.)
Riley assisted that by being an asshole
Oh, I definitely read that as written. But I thought he was lame before she started to withdraw, though. Even before he found out she was the Slayer. A big old "but he's not even pretty enough to make up for it ... well, he can kip up ... no, that's not enough!" from my side of the fence.

Blucas isn't pretty enough to make up for it? (I interrobang?!?)
Whoa.
Blucas isn't pretty enough to make up for it?
Blucas can be pretty. They didn't choose to exploit it to my satisfaction on the show. For the looks of Russell Wong or Orlando Bloom or Clive Owen you might catch me ignoring some stuff. For Riley Finn's face? I'd barely even stay awake.
Even I don't feel that Into The Woods was a testament to their 4EVA nature
I didn't buy Xander's "Keep him because you're throwing away a big manly man" speech, and Buffy's subsequent forehead slapping 'wake-up', because Riley had become entirely too needy at that point. If we were seeing the one ep S6 Riley that just made you go "Whoa. Wicked cool.", then maybe. But I saw Riley as the one who deteriorated in that relationship, so the "No, BUFFY is the wrong one here." stand kinda rubbed me wrong.
