She was grieving. Didn't have her head on straight. and partway wanted to be punished.

But... but... did it have to be Kennedy?
Couldn't it have been Vi?
Vi would've been good, but she started off tentative. The character had to be assertive because they didn't want to make it look like Willow was past grieving, but that the other character pushed it to make it happen. Hence, Kennedy was pushy.
Especially now that I've been watching Freaks and Geeks, I wish they hadn't killed Amanda (Millie on F&G, Sarah Hagen). She was just gloriously fierce in battle in an unexpected way. Now that could have been an interesting combo with Willow, because she was already a little aggressive, but not bratty like Kennedy.
They thought Willow mourning her lost love would drag the show down? Did they see the rest of the plot lines?

Xander: "Willow feeling sorry for herself...so tired of it.. Oh yeah, I remember."
See? They already knew back in S4.

And she was supposed to be 15. I'm not so into that.
I still don't think anything was especially wrong with Kennedy -- she just had the misfortune of being an okay character taking the place of two truly beloved ones.
re: Willow mopeage
There's endless whining, then there's a bit of dignified "Look, you're cute, but I'm not in a place were your aggressive come-ons are appealing."
Plus there was the "My new girlfriend needs to be part of the inner circle" thing.

Especially since Kennedy seemed like such a Faith wanna-be (as in the writers wanted her to be like Faith) who is exactly the type of person I could NOT see Willow with. And so unnecessary since they were bringing back the real thing anyway. Maybe Eliza wasn't a lock when Kennedy came on board?
eta - but yeah, Amanda wouldn't work because she's supposed to be Dawn's age. Feh.
Ah, Amanda.
How I miss you.
What about Rona? She was at least 18, wasn't she? And assertive without being like nails on a chalkboard.
Ah, Amanda.
How I miss you.
There's one shot of her in battle in Chosen that's just frozen in my mind. You see her face in profile, and her hair is whipping back and she's thrusting her weapon (a spear? I seem to remember something long) with a look of pure savage ecstasy. Perfect.
