All is well that ends in pizza.

I remember making a suggestion a few of months ago to have the Buffy quotes available like the BROQ, so that people can go sit at that generator and amuse themselves.

This was countered by people telling me "Why not sit at the message center and simply keep hitting 'refresh?'"

This may have been not-so-good advice in retrospect, and part of our hits issue. I know at least one person who actually did this. ...a lot.

Perhaps we could revisit the idea for those who just want the joy of reading buffy quotes at random. Maybe even adding a second button to the BROQ?

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I would be averse to having birthday posts in Beep Me. Generally speaking, I am also okay if we informally limit ourselves to dark announcements of over a week or so. (Though I know I'm an offender too, in this respect.) It's a nice thing, because if we're frequently around, it's a good way for people to know we've not fallen off the earth or anything, but it's also something we could do on a smaller scale, letting the people we're closest to know, so if folks ask, they could pipe up.

I like Beep Me because it allows me to keep up on the major events in people's lives, even when I'm not in full natter mode.

Yeah, I never really understood the need to mention you'd be gone for the weekend.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Sometimes, I look at Beep Me and think I'll write:

"Monday, August 25, 2003. I just swallowed a piece of gum."

Up with the sun

I thinwhat probably happened was that some people started posting weekend trips when they had a specific reason, and now a lot of people (me included) just do it as a matter of course.

I can cut it out, though. Honest.

I’m responsible for my own happiness? I can’t even be responsible for my own breakfast! (Bojack Horseman)

I would also be OK with that.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Me three.

Current slug reads:

Birth, death, illness, new job, vacation...if it's happening to you and you want us to know about it, post it here. These threads are intended for announcements only. Want to offer sympathy or congratulations, or talk about anything? Take it to Natter. Any natter here will be deleted.

Do we need a formal proposal to change it to:

Birth, death, illness, new job, vacation...if it's happening to you and you want us to know about it, post it here. These threads are intended for major announcements only. (Definitions of "major" will vary, so use your best judgement.) Want to offer sympathy or congratulations, or talk about anything? Take it to Natter. Any natter here will be deleted.

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

Why do we need a definition change for that?

I don't relish the whole argument of what constitutes "major", and then the ensuing bickering when someone posts an announcement not deemed sufficiently major for someone with their crankypants on.

Beep Me is neither a heavy traffic thread nor a mandatory one. Let's assume a little tolerance and common sense will carry us through here.

No but it's kind of drifted from its original purpose. More to the point, some folks use Beep Me as a quick way to check on the community and they're more interested in seeing Baby arrivals and new jobs than notices that somebody is going to be away from their computer for 36 hours.
